Juan José Garay (Madrid, 1970) is a contemporary visual artist whose work is rooted in abstract practice, distinguished by an ongoing exploration of materiality, color, and gestural energy. Moving away from figurative representation, his work develops a unique visual language in which sensory and emotional experience take center stage.

Through the use of mixed media, Garay creates complex surfaces where oil, acrylic, and organic materials such as cardboard, leaves, and earth coexist. This material dimension not only provides depth and texture but also establishes a direct connection with nature, generating a dynamic tension between the organic and the structural.
His production oscillates between geometric compositions—featuring recurring forms such as circles, lines, and spirals—and more intuitive, collage-like works in which chance and spontaneity play a key role. Color, applied with both intensity and sensitivity, becomes an essential constructive element, capable of transforming the viewer’s perception depending on light and perspective.
Within the context of contemporary abstraction, Juan José Garay’s work proposes a dialogue between matter and emotion, order and spontaneity, positioning itself as a continuous search for balance and expression within the language of painting.

Juan José Garay – Artist Statement
My work stems from the need to explore matter as a living language. I paint from intuition, allowing gesture, rhythm, and energy to construct the work beyond any figurative representation.
I am particularly interested in the relationship between control and chance. I use materials such as oil, acrylics, and organic elements—cardboard, leaves, or earth—because they allow me to create surfaces with memory, where each layer carries a trace of the process. The artwork is not only a result but also an experience.

In many of my pieces, movement and gesture take center stage, approaching a free and direct form of painting that resonates with abstract expressionism. At other times, I introduce more structured forms such as circles or lines, seeking balance within chaos.
Color is essential in my language. I do not understand it as decorative, but as a force capable of evoking emotion, transforming space, and altering perception.
For me, painting is a continuous process of exploration: an attempt to capture the intangible, to give form to energy, and to connect with the viewer on a deep and personal level.
